Clean at speed.

A metronome at 120 BPM, on a ladder that climbs from 96 to 132 BPM.

Metronello runs your metronome practice, on any instrument. It steps the tempo up for you, counts the rests, and tracks the fastest tempo you can play cleanly.

Stop changing the tempo by hand.

Building speed means climbing a ladder: below the target, at it, a little past it, with rests in between. Metronello plays the whole ladder for you.

  1. Pick a target. 120 BPM, say, for an exercise from the library or anything you're working on.
  2. Choose a workout. Each step plays at its share of the target: 80%, 90%, 100%, 110%.
  3. Play. The tempo changes, the rests count down, and you never touch the metronome.
Speed LadderStep 3 of 4 · 120 BPM

A workout climbing four steps, 96, 108, 120 and 132 BPM, with a rest between steps.

Three notes per stringbar 2 of 4 · 120 BPM

A guitar tab exercise scrolling under a playhead at 120 BPM, with the beat lit below it.

The exercise plays along.

Exercises scroll at the tempo of each step, so the music and the click are on one screen, big enough to read from a music stand. Loop the bars you're stuck on. The library starts with guitar tab, and other instruments will follow.

Clean, not just fast.

After each session, say how clean it was: sloppy, mostly clean or clean. Your progress follows the fastest tempo you played cleanly, so a rushed attempt at 140 doesn't count as getting faster.

80 100 120 140 140, sloppy 120 BPM

Clean at 120: it counts. "Clean up to" moves to 120, and the rushed 140 stays a grey mark above it.

The person behind Metronello

Who's behind it?

Hey! My name is Ivan. I'm a software developer, a (bedroom) guitarist, and someone who loves coming up with ideas and trying my best to turn them into things that actually work (most of the time).

I'm building this independently, driven by a love for music, technology, and the belief that getting better at your instrument should be challenging, but practicing shouldn't have to be complicated.

Questions.

When can I use it?

Metronello is coming soon to the web, Android and iOS.

Is it only for guitar?

No. The metronome and workouts are a structured click track, so they work with any instrument. The exercise library starts with guitar and will grow to other instruments.

Is it free?

Yes, to start. The metronome is free for everyone, with no account. A free account adds 20 minutes of practice a day with exercises and workouts, 5 saved workouts, and your streak. Premium removes the daily limit and adds statistics, tempo progress and the full exercise library.

What does "clean" mean?

After a session you say how it went: sloppy, mostly clean or clean. Your progress follows the fastest tempo you rated clean, so a rushed attempt at a higher tempo doesn't count as getting faster.

Do I need to read tab?

Only for the guitar exercises, which scroll as tab. Any workout also runs as a plain click track, with no exercise attached.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It's made for a phone or a tablet on a music stand as much as for a computer, and your workouts and streak follow your account.
